Hanging Around (Monarch Caterpillar Study #2)

Details: ISO: 200 | Exposure: 1/6 at f/16 | Focal Length: 90mm
Another view of the Monarch caterpillar that has taken up residence (temporarily) in recently planted milkweed. If you look closely, you can even see some of the caterpillar's eyes. Guessing from the size of the antennae (sometimes called tentacles) on the head, it will not be too much longer before this caterpillar begins its transformation into a mature butterfly.
You can see Study #1 by clicking on this link.

Housekeeping
When I started the Gallery, I had no idea how long I would keep it operating. I was surprised to find that it has been running for about six months now. Unfortunately, that realization was prompted by the number of unorganized images floating around the Gallery's directories. In order to prevent the situation from becoming unmanageable, I have started reorganizing the image directories and revising the blog entries to reflect those changes.
If you find that any of the image links are broken, please let me know. My apologies the for the inconvenience, but these changes are necessary in order for the Gallery to keep expanding.

If You Build It... (Monarch Caterpillar Study #1)

Details: ISO: 400 | Exposure: 1/15 at f/11 | Focal Length: 90mm
Apparently the phrase, "if you build it, they will come" holds true for Monarch Butterflies. Several weeks after planting some Milkweed, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Monarchs, including this Monarch caterpillar (slightly longer than an inch), had arrived.

Software Upgrade
Having missed one of the MovableType upgrades since I started running this Blog, I finally upgraded to the current version of MovableType. Thus, you may notice that the "Powered By" comment now reflects the new version, 3.17.
If you notice any problems with the Gallery now that the software has been upgraded, please leave me a comment describing the problem. Thanks.

The End Of Traditional Black And White Photography?
In what is yet another example of how the digital revolution is changing photography, reports started flying around the Internet yesterday about Kodak's announcement to discontinue manufacturing black and white photographic paper. One of the first announcements I noticed appeared on the Digital Photography Review website. Just about every photographer I know first learned to create images using black and white film and printing on black and white paper. Despite the decline in Kodak's black and white photographic paper business, it would appear--for the moment--that other manufacturers will continue making the paper. Still, the time does not seem far off when making black and white prints (silver prints) will be limited to artistic purposes rather than everyday photograhpy, and it may ultimately mean the end of traditional black and white photography.
Although the reports indicate that Kodak will continue making black and white film, it is difficult to see the point. Black and white film without black and white paper is only half a solution, and while the current photo printers can handle printing black and white, the prints just don't have the same look. There is something comforting in the knowledge that the venerable Tri-X will remain available for a while longer. Personally, however, I find it more comforting that the black and white image conversion software I use understands how Tri-X translated the color world into black and white, and allows me to give a digital image the appearance of having been shot with Tri-X.

Unwanted Guests

Details: ISO: 200 | Exposure: 1/200 at f/10 | Focal Length: 90mm
Most people who plant Milkweed (pictured above) do so to attract Monarch Butterflies. In this case, the Milkweed also plays host to some small flying insects.

Oh, To Be A Fly On The Wall...
w.jpg)
Details: ISO: 200 | Exposure: 1/200 at f/5 | Focal Length: 90mm
While I was out taking pictures over the weekend, I noticed several small flies taking turns landing on a fire bush. The flies seemed to be stopping to watch what I was doing, and I couldn't help think of the phrase "oh, to be a fly on the wall...."

Rainy Days
w.jpg)
Details: ISO: 200 | Exposure: 1/100 at f/5 | Focal Length: 90mm
With all the rain in South Florida last week, it proved too difficult to resist playing with raindrops playing with light.
Have you ever really looked at a raindrop? Watched it on a window as the light passes through it? It acts as a lens, refracting light. The next time it rains, take a good look at the raindrops on your window. If you look closely, you will see that each raindrop creates its own view of the world outside.
