Field Trip!

Details: ISO: 400 | Exposure: 1/50 at f/2 | Focal Length: 35mm
Children learn about English monarchs during a school field-trip to the National Portrait Gallery, London. It has always amazed me that children like this in England can name each of their country's monarchs going back to 1066, and yet a majority of children in American can't name more than a handful of presidents.

Walking On Water

Details: ISO: 200 | Exposure: 1/1000 at f/4 | Focal Length: 450mm
In what almost looks like a bizarre dance, this Reddish Egret seemingly walks on water as it attempts to catch up with small fish just beneath the surface.

Details: ISO: 200 | Exposure: 1/1000 at f/4 | Focal Length: 450mm
After each pass, the Egret spreads its wings to keep itself above the water and returns to a rock or perch to scan the water for more to eat.

Trackback Abuse
We've discovered that in the last few days, people have started abusing the trackback system (a system designed to make it easier to keep track of references to this site in other blogs), and they are creating fraudulent entries on other websites promoting various pornographic and gambling websites. These trackback entries are fraudulent because the websites referenced to not actually address or discuss the entry from this blog.
As we have started doing with those who would seek to abuse the comment system, we are permanently blocking access to the Gallery to those who create fraudulent trackback entries. Unfortunately, we must catch and remove these entries before we can prevent future entries from the same source. We apologize if you happen to review some of these trackback entries before we have an opportunity to review and eliminate them. We are doing our best to prevent this sort of wrongful conduct from forcing us to shut down or otherwise seriously restrict access to the Gallery.
If you wish to discuss one of the entries here in another blog, please feel free to use the trackback system. And as always, we hope that you enjoy your visit to the Gallery.

New Archives Added
The growth of the Gallery has exceeded our original expectations, and as a result, we wanted to ensure that there were still ways to locate older, archived entries.
We have now added two links to the Archives section on the right side of this page. The first link, "All entries organized by category", will display the titles of each Gallery entry together with the date of the entry, and all entries are organized by category. Alternatively, you can use the second link, "All Monthly Calendars", to bring up a page showing the calendar for each month the Gallery has been in operation. As with the calendar display on the right side of this page, the dates containing entries are highlighted and selecting a date will bring up the corresponding entry.
Of course, we still have the category archives--which will bring up a page displaying all entries in the selected category--and monthly archives--which will display all entries for a given month. And we still have a search feature that will search the text of each entry to locate matching keywords.
Hopefully, these additional archives will make navigating the Gallery's archives easier and faster.

Adobe and Nikon Agree To Work Together?
I was somewhat surprised by the Nikon/Adobe announcement that appeared on the Digital Photography Review (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0509/05090601nikon_adobe.asp) website this morning. Nikon caused a stir in the digital photography world earlier this year when it encrypted white balance information in Camera Raw format files generated by its D2X camera. There was a real fear among photographers that Nikon's encryption of this information was intended to prevent companies like Adobe from accessing raw format images directly.
Today's announcement, however, raises a number of questions. While each company has made vague comments about working together for the common good, neither has mentioned how it will work together. Likewise, Nikon has not said anything definitive regarding its encryption of white balance information, why it elected to use encryption, whether it intends to expand its use of encryption, and whether these issues relate in any way to Nikon's desire to promote is own Nikon Capture software.
It will be interesting to see what level of cooperation between Adobe--who has been promoting its own raw format standard called Digital Negative or DNG and its own raw format converter for Photoshop--and Nikon--who is promoting its own raw format, NEF, and the development of its own raw converter, Nikon Capture--actually exists given these potentially conflicting interests.
For more information about Adobe's Digital Negative format, see http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/main.html. For more information about Nikon's efforts to protect its NEF format, see http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Nikon-Defends-Encrypted-NEF-Format.htm.

Illlusions and Landscapes

Sometimes the most common sights can appear to be unusual landscapes. In this case, a small stretch of beach on the east coast at sunset appears to be a much larger landscape.
