A friend asked me what I look for when photographing people. He had noticed that I don't generally ask people to pose for a picture. Although I hadn’t given the question much thought for a very long time (more than 30 years), the first answer that came to mind was that I prefer capturing people as they are. The more I thought about the question, however, the more I realized that the real answer is much simpler. What I really enjoy doing is trying to capture the moment. Like a memory, a photograph can be a moment frozen in time. It becomes a vehicle for transporting us back to a place and time, and with a little luck, gives us a sense and understanding of the moment.
