Catching The Ball (On The Racquet)
While there are a number of challenges when it comes to photographing tennis, two of challenges I've always enjoyed have been catching the players' expressions and timing the shots so as to catch the ball at the point of impact with the racquet. Here are a few "catching the ball" shots from a tournament last weekend.

Expression & Timing

Details: ISO: 200 | Exposure: 1/1000 at f/5 | Focal Length: 300mm
One of the aspects of sports photography I’ve always found challenging is catching images that people don’t often see. Much of this involves timing shots so as to catch expressions (as with the first picture above), but sometimes it involves catching peak action to freeze a unique view (like the face looking through the tennis racket in mid-swing).
A common misconception among novices is that shooting sports involves nothing more than using a camera with a fast motor drive, and letting the camera record sequences of events. The problem is this method involves more luck than skill, and more often than not, the timing will never be quite right. In many cases, the focus won’t be right either, because if the shutter is opening and closing, the photographer or the autofocus system won’t have the ability to adjust the focus (resulting in a sequence where the first image might be in focus but the rest are out of focus if the subject is moving).

Sunday Afternoon Tennis
It's been about fifteen or so years since I last photographed a tennis match. The hiatus finally came to an end as I managed to make it out to a college match today. The University of Miami's women's tennis team took on and defeated the University of Maryland today, and the following are a selection of images from those matches (you can open larger versions of the images by clicking on them).
Everything was shot at ISO 200, with exposures ranging from 1/500 to 1/1000 at f/4. The focal lengths ranged from 280mm to 450mm.
